Germany’s Music Industry in 2024: A Year of Record Growth and Shifting Trends

Germany’s recorded music industry hit a new milestone in 2024, with revenues surging 7.8% to €2.38 billion ($2.5 billion). For the first time ever, digital music revenues crossed the €2 billion mark, solidifying Germany’s transition into a streaming-driven market.

Streaming Takes Over

Streaming continued to dominate, with audio streaming revenue growing by 12.6%, now making up 78.1% of the total market. German listeners streamed a staggering 236 billion tracks in 2024, averaging nearly 20 billion streams per month. The biggest day in German streaming history? December 24, 2024, when an all-time record 927 million streams were logged in a single day.

Physical Music Sales: A Mixed Bag

While digital consumption soared, physical music sales declined by 7.4%. CD sales took the hardest hit, dropping 22.5%, and now make up just 8% of the total market. However, one physical format remains a fan favorite—vinyl sales grew by 9.4%, proving that the love for records is still strong.

The Rise of German-Language Music

German-speaking artists dominated the charts, with homegrown talents like Ayliva, Luciano, and Nina Chuba leading the way. In fact, eight of the top ten most-streamed artists of the decade in Germany were German-speaking acts. Streaming of German-language pop surged 15%, reflecting a growing demand for local music. Meanwhile, genres like country and folk also saw a boost, thanks to international stars like Beyoncé, Dasha, Shaboozey, and Hozier.

The AI Debate: Protecting Artists in the Digital Age

With streaming and AI reshaping the industry, Dr. Florian Drücke, CEO of the German Music Industry Association (BVMI), called for stronger protections for artists. He emphasized the need for binding agreements to ensure that AI does not exploit musicians' work without their consent. As technology advances, the industry is grappling with how to balance innovation with fair compensation for creators.

What’s Next for Germany’s Music Scene?

2024 was a transformative year for Germany’s music industry. Streaming is now king, vinyl remains resilient, and local artists are thriving. However, challenges remain—from declining CD sales to the ongoing debate over AI’s role in music. As 2025 approaches, one thing is clear: Germany’s music landscape is evolving faster than ever.
