Age is just a number, and Shitsui Hakoishi proves it every day. At 108 years old, she has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest female barber. Despite her incredible age, she still works in her barbershop in Nakagawa, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, welcoming customers with the same passion and skill that have defined her nearly century-long career.

A Lifetime Behind the Chair

Hakoishi’s journey in barbering began at just 14 years old, when she left home to train in Tokyo. By 20, she had earned her barber’s license and, alongside her husband, opened her first salon. However, life was not always kind—her husband was killed in the Japan-China war of 1937, and during World War II, her shop was destroyed in the U.S. firebombing of Tokyo in 1945.

Instead of giving up, she returned to her hometown of Nakagawa and started over, rebuilding her business from scratch. Decades later, her barbershop remains a staple in the community, with loyal customers spanning multiple generations.

The Secret to Her Longevity

So, what keeps Hakoishi going at 108 years old? She credits her long career and active lifestyle to the love and support of her customers. Even now, she has no plans to retire, setting her sights on continuing her work until at least 110.

“I’m truly happy,” she said upon receiving her Guinness World Record title. “As long as my hands can move, I’ll keep cutting hair.”
